Current Position
Web design consultant and user experience professional
Since 1996 under the name Rhythmspice, I have worked as a freelance web designer and user experience professional. I consult with businesses on their website, their strategy, and of course, the design of their site. I also do web development to a certain extent, specializing in XHTML/CSS/Web Standards implementations and teaching accessibility awareness.
Recent Experience
Eons.com, Director of Design and User Experience
Internet startup founded by Jeff Taylor, former CEO of Monster.com
February 2006 - February 2007
- Lead the information architecture, interaction, and visual design of the original Eons.com site (August 2006 launch)
- As the original designer, I built and managed a team of designers and user experience specialists
- Helped integrate Agile and User Experience methodologies
- Conducted and began a usability / user validation program
- Architected and coded much of the original front-end XHTML/CSS for the site, employing Web Standards methodologies
- Designed several of the core applications and some of the database models
BrownCo (BrownCo.com) Experience Design Lead
A division of JP Morgan Invest, LLC (JP Morgan Chase)
January 2005 - February 2006
As a member of the BrownCo Experience Design team, I helped design the information, interfaces and experiences of the active trader customers. Using the UCD methodoloy, I was responsible for everything from goal/task exploration through usability testing and final markup/CSS creation. Early on, I helped BrownCo’s Product Management team learn how to ideate and build visual models of customer’s goals/tasks to facilitate the design of the site and insert a better UCD methodology into their project lifecycle.
I also lead the adoption of Web Standards methodologies (structured XHTML, CSS, and ECMA Script) and managed the creation of all of the CSS and markup, acting as a bridge between the UI Development and Experience Design groups. Before BrownCo was sold to ETrade, I also was a primary consultant for web accessibility issues and was a member of JPMC’s Access Ability networking group.
Fidelity Investments (Fidelity.com) Lead Designer, Information Architect
August 2003 - November 2004
- Design interfaces for Fidelity.com and constituent websites. Helped prototype and design highest-trafficked areas of the site, including a project to merge of Netbenefits and Fidelity.com. Involved with drafting user scenarios, personas, business metrics & goals, strategies, interface design and development.
- Lead Designer for the Fidelity.com Stock Screener (July, 2004) and parts of the Account Opening processes. Created personas and designs with the VP of Fidelity Research and worked in tandem with the external development team to create Fidelity’s first website using semantic XHTML and CSS.
- Introduced the Fidelity Design Team to Web Standards, and the use of CSS/XHTML for templating. Taught classes on CSS, consulted on best practices in accessibility, and trained co-workers on these methods.
Terra Lycos: Lead Designer for Financial Products
July 2000 - August 2003
I was the lead designer for Terra Lycos’s financial websites and took responsibility for creating designs that were profitable for consumer and business. My deliverables took the form of working prototypes, built in XHTML/HTML/CSS/ASP.
- Created a brand strategy for Quote.com
- During tough 2002 market conditions in 2002, I helped Quote.com realize a 7% increase in subscriptions by:
- Redesigning the subscription-description pages and registration process
- Leading the design of an upsell strategy for current subscribers
- Designed trading applications such as LiveCharts™ Plus (Also manage design of LiveCharts™)
- Conceived new advertising vehicles like LiveCharts™ Skins, worth over $500,000 to date
- Wrote and presented a 4-part workshop for Lycos on web standards (XHTML & CSS), addressing business and technical issues
SmartPlanet.com - Web Designer
A subsidiary of ZDNet and Cnet
August 1999 - May 2000
Full-time position as web designer for online learning website. In addition to site design, I established a style guide for the site and trained producer on technologies.
